RLF/A+C wins big at CANstruction

Sunday, October 18, 2009, The RLF/A+C design team was recognized with three awards at the 2009 CANstruction competition – Juror’s Favorite, Structural Ingenuity and Best Signage.

This year’s event embraced the theme “Build a Community of Cans,” meaning all of the structures reflected a different part of the community.  Using 2,551 Winn Dixie cans, the RLF/A+C team constructed Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum, one of the most significant and recognizable architectural icons of the 20th century.  Over 1,000 cans contained organically grown vegetables, representing Wright’s philosophy of “organic” architecture embodied by this landmark building.  The team’s slogan, “The Art of Fighting Hunger,” established the partnership between museum and mission, and was emphasized in a banner-like sign depicting Andy Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup Can” image, an appropriate symbol given the purpose of the event.  Despite the economy, the team collected close to $6,000 from 17 consultant sponsors.  All donations will directly benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.
