Located on the island of Sicily off the southern coast of Italy, this project replaces forty aging buildings on an existing military base with 220,000 gsf of new construction distributed between six new state-of-the-art facilities.
The new buildings were placed within the site to create strong pedestrian ways and a series of landscaped outdoor rooms while maintaining complete operations during six years of construction. The design also provides flexibility for future expansion.
The new facilities included an education / orientation center, library, dining hall, conference center, training / administrative spaces, chapel and indoor / outdoor recreational facilities contained within an architecture that responds to its local context and purpose.
